Reviews for Sydney Chamber Opera's Awakening Shadow

“ 4.5 stars. This beautifully curated production from one of Australia’s most innovative arts groups lingers in the mind like the 20th century’s haunting ruins.” - Sydney Morning Herald

“a riveting 90 minutes of exciting and at times challenging contrasting music superbly performed by four singers and four musicians under music director and pianist Jack Symonds, tightly directed by Imara Savage.” - Daily Telegraph

“Led formidably by tenor Brenton Spiteri and a stellar trio of ‘fates’ (Jane Sheldon, Emily Edmonds, Simon Lobelson), the music of both Britten and Styles was acquitted gorgeously; all four singers exquisite across the board.” - Limelight Magazine

Sydney Chamber Opera presented the Australian premiere season of ‘Awakening Shadow’ at Carriageworks from 30 Sep – 7 Oct, 2022.

Backed by a stellar creative team, this impressive production features Benjamin Britten’s five Canticles entwined with a new work in response by leading Australian composer Luke Styles. One of the 20th century’s most personal works, the Canticles are a seminal portrait of Britten’s musical voice, written throughout his life for partner and muse Peter Pears.
